Dior’s SS20 Beauty Look Was All About Upcycling Your Eyeshadow And Keeping Things Minimal

For SS20, Dior turned to nature for its inspiration. Staged in the centre of a secret glade filled with trees that would eventually be replanted post-show, Maria Grazia’s latest offering observed the current climate crisis (a timely mood considering Greta Thunberg’s generation-defining speech at the UN earlier this week).

Accordingly, backstage the hair and make-up looks followed suit. ‘The set is about naturality and being as green as we can be, so we’re doing healthy looking skin today,’ Creative And Image Director of Christian Dior Make-Up, Peter Philips told press backstage. ‘Maria Grazia wanted it to be very effortless and fresh.’

Encouraging women to embrace a more minimal approach to their make-up, simply ‘enhancing what they like, and lightly covering what they don’t’, Philips gave Grazia’s army of au natural models perfectly clear complexions with an appropriately French girl twist.

So how do you achieve model-worthy skin without using an armful of products?

Step 1

‘The skin is all about hydration so I’m using moisturiser first.’

Step 2

‘Next I’m applying the Backstage Face And Body Foundation.’

Step 3

‘I’m finishing the skin with a spray of face mist over the top to keep everything fresh and illuminated.’

Step 4

‘I’m not using any mascara, I’m just curling the eyelashes. Then I’m applying a tiny bit of eyeliner for a Parisian touch – it’s very subtle and elegant.’

The genius eco twist to Philips’ pared back make-up look? Upcycling your eyeshadow. ‘I’m using the new Dior Custom Eye Palette in Universal Neutral and mixing the eyeshadow with the gel wax to make an eyeliner. It’s great because you can take any eyeshadow you own and recycle it to make an eyeliner.’

The overarching message? ‘Make-up is very tempting, it’s like candy, and too much candy isn’t good for you. It’s tempting to buy every new lipstick but you don’t have to.’ In other words, when it comes to your make-up, and the planet, less is more.
