Hold Onto Your Hats, Chanel’s Cruise’20 Collection Is Giving Us Serious Travel Envy

Leave it to the French to awaken a sense of wanderlust in us. There’s something about the City of Lights that turns us all into starry-eyed wanderers for endless afternoon strolls down the Champs-Élysées. Is it the champagne glow of the street lamps emanating across the rippling waters of the River la Seine, the way Paris looks when it’s just rained, or perhaps the fervent heartbeat of Parisian streets at midnight?

19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire sums up this sentiment rather nicely in what he fondly coins flâner when describing Paris: the art of wandering the city streets with no end destination in mind except for the pleasure of soaking up the city’s ambience. If that is what it is, then Virginie Viard has made serious flâneurs out of us. Set in a charming Parisian train station replete in its classical Beaux Arts architectural grandeur, Chanel Cruise’20 Collection unfolds a timeless tale of travel written in black, ecru and white, amidst a dreamy backdrop of pastel hues of pink, green, blue.

The Cruise collection heralds the liberated traveler unencumbered by the sleight of time, embodying an effortless modernity that traverses social conformities, accentuated by two-tone booties with conic heels. Carried by the tradition of comfort and accompanied by the modernity of the future, functionality sits at the forefront of the collection, introducing multifunctional hip packs in tricolour pastel shades of leather and quilted leather cases hugging travel flasks, ensuring travel with complete ease.

Unveiling double breasted tweed jackets with draped panels, lengthened knickerbockers made in tweed, a man’s shirt in poplin and wide-cut hessian trousers, boyish angles and masculine cuts are softened with feminine details created with flounced jabots or a fabric-woven chain belt. Masculine silhouettes are texturised with ruffles and deconstructed with knotted satin ribbons ending in camellias.

Inspired by blurred countryside landscapes from a train window, foliage prints, flower broderie sequinned or cut from silk, tulle and rhodoid meld with pink and blue sequins that accumulate, reminiscent of chads that fall as they are punched out from train tickets. The chapter continues, unveiling station clocks immortalised in lace-embroidered clutches, a nod to the ages and of the sophisticated simplicity characteristic of Chanel’s legacy.
