The Most Awkward Moments At The 2020 Golden Globes

It wouldn’t be an awards ceremony without a fair few awkward moments. And over the years there have been many. Cast your minds back toEmma Stone‘s accidental three-way hug with Damien Chazelle (director of La La Land) and his wife and Jennifer Lawrence‘s spectacular trip up the stairs to collect her Oscar or the 2018 Academy Awards Best Picture mix-up.

With the king of controversy Ricky Gervais presenting the 2020 Golden Globes for the fifth and final time, the awkwardness was inevitable and he hit is cringeworthy mark straight from the opening monologue.

In case you missed it, here are the most awkward moments from this year’s Golden Globes’s ceremony.

1) Ricky Gervais Roasted Leonardo DiCaprio for his Dating Record

Leave it to Gervais to make something already unspokenly awkward, very openly awkward. In his monologue, the British comedian commented on the rather long running time of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood in which DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie star, only to use the 45-year-old’s dating history as the punchline.

‘Nearly three hours long, Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end, his date was almost too old for him,’ the comedian stated.

Just watch Leo’s squirm, oof:

ICYMI, DiCaprio’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Camila Morrone defended their age gap earlier this year.

2) The Camera Focussed On Jennifer Aniston During Brad Pitt Dating Gag

During Brad Pitt‘s Golden Globe acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor in his role in One Upon A Time In… Hollywood, the actor made light of the media’s fascination with his love life.

‘I was going to bring my mum but I couldn’t ’cause any woman I stand next to they say I’m dating them,’ he joked.

However, while the nail-biting moment occurred the cameraman panned across to see Pitt’s ex wife Aniston’s face during his dating joke.

3) Sofia Vergara And Matt Bomer Crossed Lines Presenting

Autocues are responsible for many an awkward moment and surprise, surprise, it happened again in 2020.

When the Modern Family actress and American Horror Story actor went to say the same line, Vergara’s eyes widened before she exclaimed: ‘That was my line!’ The actress then teased Bomer and encouraged him to carry on. Was it planned? We’re not sure, but either way Twitter enjoyed it.

4) The Music Drowned Out Renée Zellwegger’s Acceptance Speech

Following Olivia’s Colman’s raspberry noise when the Academy Awards attempted to drown out her Oscar-winning acceptance speech last year, you’d think Hollywood would know better by now than to kick off an actor during their big moment on stage.

However, Zellweger became the latest victim of the Golden Globes’ strict time schedule on Sunday evening.

After accepting her Golden Globe Best Actress In A Motion Picture – Drama during the ceremony, the Judy actress delivered a passionate speech about Judy Garland being ‘one of the greatest icons of our time’.

However, at the end of her speech the awards ceremony drowned out the rest of her words.

Anyone else think E! News presenter Ryan Seacrest might have had something to do with the music faux pas? After all, the actress did accidentally call him ‘Brian’ during their interview prior to the show.

The moment was made even more awkward when Gervais jokingly asked the audience to ‘kill’ him following Zellweger’s speech.

5) Beyoncé refused to give Joaquin Phoenix a standing ovation

Despite not winning a Golden Globe at the ceremony, Beyoncé was able to make a powerful, silent statement during the ceremony that shocked onlookers.

When Phoenix was announced the winner of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role as the Joker in the Batman spin off film – the singer remained seated while the rest of the audience gave the actor a standing ovation.

Oh, and Twitter noticed.

6) Tom Hanks’s face while listening to Ricky Gervais was priceless

Without a doubt, among the Hollywood A-listers that squirmed during Gervais’ speech during his monologue, it was Tom Hanks’ reaction that has become the most memorable.

First, there was the actor’s shocked expression following the Office star’s joke about actress Felicity Huffman (who was recently released from prison), which forced him to ask for more champagne.

Then there was his open-mouthed reaction to Gervais’ comments about Apple and political statements.

Hanks was all of us last night.

7) Ansel Elgort awkwardly sang during his presenting gig

Instead of speaking to the audience to announce the Best Original Song – Motion Picture, Elgort sang his autocue, much to the amusement of his presenting partner, Johnson.

Unfortunately, Twitter was less than impressed by the star’s decision to sing.

8) Elton John crashed Helen Mirren’s interview

During Mirren’s interview with Sharon Osbourne for Entertainment Tonight, John and his husband David Furnish crashed the Oscar winner’s camera moment.

The encounter involved a lot of forced cheek kisses, compliments about Gucci outfits, Osbourne calling the new Cats film ‘crap’ and John singing a really awkward tune about Mirren’s bust.

9) Roman Griffin Davis shocked Giuliana Rancic by talking about Hitler

During his red carpet appearance at last night’s Golden Globes, the young actor reflected on his favourite moment from filming Jo Jo Rabbit.

‘Kicking Hitler in the balls,’ he told the E! News presenter of his best moment. ‘I loved it. I think it should be a tradition on your birthday.’

All Rancic could do was laugh and we can see why.
