Classic Beauty Products

You know the saying, “Old is gold.” This month, we revisit old school beauty classic that have stood the test of time and continue to be a holy grail in our beauty routines all this while—proving that sometimes, your first love is the truest.

Check out our personal picks below:

“Mama’s favourite”

BOBBI BROWN VITAMIN ENRICHED FACE BASE FACE PRIMER, $90

This cream was something that never left my mum’s vanity — she didn’t have much of a makeup collection, but this was something that she put on religiously every morning before powdering her face with two-way cake (yes, that was the thing in 2012). She said it makes any complexion product look better on the skin; and gifted me a half-used jar when I started to put together my own makeup collection three years later. Primers (and priming) weren’t popular till recently, so this “face base” was ahead of its time. It sets to a slightly tacky finish for foundation to grip onto — and while I’ve tried many primers since, this is the one I always go back to. — Chelsea Tang

“An investment piece”

SKINCEUTICALS HYDRATING B5 GEL, $156

Buying an expensive serum (or any skincare for that matter) is a big commitment for me, but this serum has proven to be the best investment so far. My skin gets dry very quickly, and is only rescued by my monthly hydrating facial at Eternelle V Aesthetic Clinic & Medispa. My therapist recommended this serum to keep my skin hydrated and plump in between facials, making it less sensitive and less rough until the next appointment. Now that we can’t have facials, it has truly been my lifesaver. Although my skin is still showing signs of dryness as my last facial was almost two months ago, it is definitely not as parched as before. — Caroline Suganda

“Scent of nostalgia”

ACQUA DI PARMA COLONIA ESSENZA EAU DE COLOGNE, $215

I picked this up when I was 19 years old and still in art school — and still remember the first time I caught a whiff of the musky-citrus scent like it was yesterday. While I initially purchased the fragrance because it reminded me of a certain someone (typical, I know), seven years down the road, I feel like I’ve actually developed a relationship with the scent itself. It opens with a bright, punchy note, and mellows out into a comforting powdery base that reminds me of freshly laundered shirts. This scent is like a time-rewind vitamin that I know I’ll be gladly popping another seven years from now. — Gregory Woo

“The hair charmer”

OUAI WAVE SPRAY, $40

Something that you’d always spy in my beauty collection is this hair spray — formulated with rice protein instead of usual sea salt, it doesn’t weigh down fine tresses nor feel sticky to the touch. I have straight, thin, waist-long hair that doesn’t take too well to hairstyling products, so I rely on this to create natural beach waves every day. To get bouncy, defined curls, I’ll braid my hair after spraying it down when it’s partially dry, and head to bed. It works like magic and is perfect for people like me, who don’t like to air-dry their hair after washing. — Jenine Oh

“One true love”

BURBERRY BEAUTY CAT LASHES MASCARA IN JET BLACK, $52

I have typical Asian lashes that are short and dip downwards, even after using an eyelash curler and cult mascara favourites from drugstore to luxury brands. But this one beauty find truly helps to lift and lengthen my lashes, coating my lashes evenly with minimal clumping, and most importantly, retaining the curl throughout the day. Four years on, I still think the same thing I did when I first put it on: “This is most definitely the one.” — Andrea Sim

“Skincare staple”

SK-II FACIAL TREATMENT ESSENCE, FROM $108

My first encounter with this “miracle water” came after I invested in a trial size bottle during my university days. It softens, brightens, and leaves my skin looking luminous — in fact, it even dramatically lightened my scarring and hyperpigmentation as I continued to use it. I always have a bottle of this essence in my skincare rotation; whenever my skin misbehaves, the potent fermented formula whips it back into shape. I’ve tried so many other versions but always find my way back to this OG. — Hanan Haddad

“Cream of the crop”

LANEIGE WATER BANK HYDRO CREAM EX, $52

Despite trying out several moisturisers, I still find myself coming back to this, simply because of how it improves the texture and look of my dry skin. The non-sticky cream keeps my skin hydrated all day and gives my complexion a healthy glow. When I’m feeling lazy with my skincare, I mix it with foundation and use the concoction as a cooling tinted moisturiser. — Katherine Ang
