Last week, Dior debut their Cruise 2021 collection set in the historical Italian city of Lecce. The fashion show was a celebration of the beauty, history and tradition of the surrounding area, Puglia — a region known for craftsmanship. Being Italian, creative director of the luxury fashion maison, Maria Grazia Chiuri has planned for her cruise collection to be shown there prior to Covid-19. And while the global pandemic halted international travel and prevented large gatherings, Chiuri stayed true to her vision and unveiled her collection through a conventional fashion show sans physical attendees. Instead, the world got their own front row seat via a digital showcase of the fashion show.
While most brands has decided to par back their shows, Dior kept true to their vision, sparring no expense for their stunning fashion show. In true Dior-fashion, the Cruise 2021 show was truly a sight to behold with a set that consisted of over 30,000 LED bulbs and 60 tons of structural scaffolding which took over 12 days to assemble. The models glided down the runway to a rousing orchestra and a performance by Italian rock musician Giuliano Sangiorgi. Not to mention, folk dancers were frolicking around the epic set, darting around models which is not new for Chiuri who had featured dancers in multiple shows, most notably the Dior Spring Summer 2019 one.
For fans of the French maison, Dior’s Cruise 2021 collection is a feast for the eyes with 90 looks that showcases the craftsmanship of the French maison’s atelier. The 70s-inspired looks had a boho-flair featuring intricate embroidery, crochet pieces and tie-dye elements that continue to be a strong trend in 2020. Most notably, Dior’s staple handbags such as the Lady Dior and the new Bobby Bag are also in the collection, this time in deep mahogany with stunning patterns embossed into the leather. A reference to the craftsmanship in the Puglia area perhaps, but regardless it’s gorgeous.
