D PROGRAM ALLERDEFENSE ESSENCE SPF46 PA+++, $40.90
I haven’t been out much to experience the real efficacy of this sunscreen; it boasts skin defence benefits by shielding skin from airborne particles and UV rays, while neutralising the acidity of the particles on the skin. What I did notice is that my skin didn’t itch as much after having it on. The lightweight sunscreen has a texture that’s almost like a skincare essence, so it sits easily on the skin without feeling tacky. It’s also superbly moisturising, and leaves a pretty, glossy finish on the skin. The cherry on top? It’s fragrance-free too.
NEUTROGENA ULTRA SHEER DRY-TOUCH FACE LOTION, $28
Give the white cream some time to absorb into the skin, and you’ll realise that it works like a tone-up cream — lightly evening out the complexion so that your skin looks rosier and more radiant. A matte “film” of sorts is left on the skin — it’s a next-level sun protector for skin (keeps blue light at bay) and also keeps skin non-greasy throughout the day.
ANESSA PERFECT UV SUNSCREEN SKINCARE MILK SPF50+ PA++++, FROM $41.90
Pushing the limits is what this sunscreen does. While already being water-resistant (i.e. it’s not going to slide off your skin if you perspire), it’s now able to provide even greater UV protection by adapting and reacting to solar and body heat — perfect for sweltering hot days. And true to its name, the sunscreen does have a milky, serum-like texture, which makes it a joy to apply. As the day goes on, the initial sheen disappears, leaving a smooth, satin finish in its place.
THE BODY SHOP SKIN DEFENCE MULTI-PROTECTION LOTION, $45
This sunscreen checks all my boxes: It’s very light on the skin (thanks to the watery texture) and does not leave a white cast. It does leave a sheen on the skin, giving you a healthy, just-worked-out glow. I must say that while the sunscreen feels a little sticky the first few minutes after application, the tackiness quickly goes away as the product gets absorbed into the skin. This is an improved formula that offers higher UVA protection than the previous version.
CLARINS SUN CARE WATER MIST SPF50+, $50
I confess: I don’t ever use sunscreen unless I’m out under the sun the entire day, which only happens when I’m cycling or snowboarding. It’s largely due to it being an extra step in my skincare routine (which I keep as lean as possible), but also because I associate it with an icky, sticky feeling on the skin. This sunscreen though, surprised me with how fuss-free, non-greasy, and non-tacky it is. Best of all, it’s packaged in a spray bottle so it literally takes me three seconds to put it on. That, plus how lightweight it feels on the skin, is something I could definitely get with.
SUNPLAY SKIN AQUA TONE UP UV ESSENCE (MINT GREEN) SPF50+ PA++++, $27.90
Never thought I’d say this but here goes: This sunscreen leaves a cast and I actually like it. Don’t be alarmed when you smear it on; it goes on mint green, then becomes white as it melts into the skin. The effect is intentional, as the sunscreen is formulated to colour-correct redness so you get an even skin tone. It also gave my skin a glassy finish, or at least took it a step in the right direction.
