2020 has been a year that’s full of changes and that’s especially so for the fashion industry where multiple brands have switched from staging physical runways to having digital presentations. In a more dramatic feat, several major brands have even broken away from the traditional Fashion Week schedules, only to unveil their collections when they are ready to be shown. At the forefront of this new departure is Michael Kors; the brand usually releases its collection during New York Fashion Week, but this season saw the brand debuting its Spring/Summer 2021 collection after the fashion week season has ended.
For Spring/Summer 2021, Michael Kors presented his collection on the rooftop of a community garden in the Bronx that’s supported by the New York Restoration Project, an organisation that Kors has been supporting for the past 25 years. Also participating in this project is American Idol winner, Samantha Diaz who Kors and his husband “immediately fell in love with” after watching her perform on the show. Diaz sang a medley of Carole King’s songs with her soulful voice resonating throughout the set, bringing a sense of comfort to the viewers.
This season’s collection is “all about ease” and “laid-back luxury”, these elements are seen in the dégagé suits in white, flowy dresses with batwing sleeves either belted or unbelted and oversized sweaters. Almost all the pieces are versatile enough to allow the wearers to transit from attending Zoom meetings to dinner dates. As for the colour palette, the collection mainly features earthy tones, greys and pops of blue. Also seen in this collection are the artisanal hand-woven bags and flat leather sandals. Overall, this collection brings to mind something simple yet timelessly chic that’s befitting of an urban woman.
