The worlds of food and beauty have long been intertwined, at least, in their lexicon. From soft ‘peachy’ blushes to luscious ‘mocha’ foundations, there’s nary a delicious edible that the beauty world hasn’t co-opted to make its wares that much more enticing. And now, thanks to some inventive hair colourists in Japan and Singapore, we officially have the next big, yummy trend du jour: ‘Milk tea hair’.
Currently trending across Asia,’milk tea hair’ is a creamy, soft beige, reminiscent of—no surprises here—a cup of tea with a splash of milk. Sitting on the spectrum between a dark blonde and a light brown, the colour is neither too warm or too cool, making it an excellent match for a variety of skin tones.
Of course, as with most hair trends, the look can be personalised. Based on images surfacing under the trending hashtag #milkteahair on Instagram, the style is extremely versatile, spanning across ombré styles, mixing warm and cool tones from root to tip, and more subtle all-over hues.
Although it is currently summer in Asia, the colour is actually season-less thanks to its subtle, neutral finish. Want to try it for yourself? Be sure to ask your colourist for a hue that starts off as warm and golden at the roots and then softens into an ashier tone at the ends, similar to the way the tea starts off dark and gradually lightens with the addition of milk.
